On April 11th, 2019, CGS proudly hosted Naureen Butt who presented “One Woman’s Journey From Pakistan to the United States: A Struggle for Women’s Rights”. This event was co-sponsored by  The University of Illinois Air Force ROTCThe Center for South Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, and The Women & Gender in Global Perspectives Program.

Event Description: In her talk, Naureen Butt discussed the recent history of Pakistan, particularly the challenges faced by women during the rise of the Pakistani Taliban. Born into an influential military family, she witnessed important changes among the Pashtun people. She also shared personal stories from her happy childhood, her harrowing 20’s, and finally her arrival to the U.S.

Bio: Naureen Butt is currently a Regional Expertise & Cultural Instructor for the USAF Special Operations School at the Hurlburt Airforce Base in Florida. Formerly, she was a Subject Matter Expert at the Defence Language Institute in Washington, D.C. and has worked with several different government entities. She studied Political Science, Economics, World History, English, and Urdu at St. Joseph’s College for Women in Karachi, Pakistan and Graphic Design at National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan and later pursued a Masters in Fine Arts at George Washington University.
