Call for GLBL 296 and 298 proposals

The LAS Global Studies program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking proposals for one-credit undergraduate seminars (GLBL 296) that address contemporary societal challenges and engage students in research and discussion on potential solutions. Additionally, courses are half-semester courses and offered on campus. These seminars should encourage interdisciplinary thinking with a global perspective and may cover topics like transitional justice, environmental justice, immigration reform, or peace operations. Aimed at assisting Global Studies majors in defining their thematic focus, these courses also attract students from other disciplines and can lay a foundation for senior capstone projects.

Eligible applicants include current tenured, tenure-track, specialized, and emeritus faculty, as well as academic professionals with at least a Master’s degree and advanced graduate students in good standing. Graduate students who have not previously taught GLBL 296 are preferred, though exceptions may apply. Proposals for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 courses are welcome, with options for full or half-term formats. Stipends of $3,500 for faculty and $3,000 for graduate students are available, with the possibility for faculty to explore credit towards on-load teaching.

The LAS Global Studies program invites proposals for GLBL 298: Global Studies Seminar Abroad (GSSA), a special topics course that combines on-campus instruction with a short-term, immersive experience abroad. These seminars, designed to deepen students' understanding of global issues, begin on campus—typically during the second 8-week term—and continue abroad for 2-3 weeks. During the international component, students engage in intensive, applied learning, developing skills to analyze complex issues from interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. Programs generally occur between late December to mid-January for fall term courses, and from late May to mid-June for spring.

Eligible candidates for directing GSSA include tenured and tenure-track faculty, specialized faculty, emeritus faculty, and academic professionals (with at least a Master’s degree, PhD preferred). Faculty directors benefit from an enriching teaching experience, as well as the opportunity to cultivate professional relationships abroad. Director expenses for travel, lodging, and per diem are covered, and salaries are awarded based on a tiered scale starting at $6,000.

Faculty whose proposals are accepted will work with LAS International Programs to finalize their course plans and ensure compliance with the university’s safety and security standards. Additionally, directors are expected to attend pre-program planning meetings in April/May 2025 and participate in relevant training sessions.
