Tuition and Financial Support

The Master of Science in Global Studies (MSGS) is a 32-credit-hour graduate degree available in both on-campus and online formats. Students are encouraged to explore a variety of funding options, including student loans, fellowships, employer sponsorship, and graduate hourly employment opportunities.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fee rates are established by the University and are subject to change.

Online students: Tuition for online students

Financial Aid

Important: MSGS is a self-supporting program without state support, as defined by University policy, so students are not eligible for tuition-waiver-generating assistantships. In addition, University of Illinois staff waivers are unable to be used for the MSGS degree due to its self-supporting status. MSGS students may be eligible for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships.

U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizen may qualify for federal and private student aid through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA). Students are encouraged to consult the OSFA website for current information regarding eligibility, loans, and repayment options. Additional funding resources include:

  1. The Graduate College at the University of Illinois maintains a list of external fellowships.
  2. Students whose employer is sponsoring their tuition may be eligible to use Sponsor Billing.

Graduate Hourly Employment

Graduate hourly positions are available across the University of Illinois and provide opportunities for students to gain professional experience while earning income. Students may search and apply for positions through the Virtual Job Board.

Graduate hourly positions do not include tuition or fee waivers.
