Experience Puerto Rico: A Unique Journey in Sustainable Design

FAA 491/UP 494
Experience Puerto Rico: A Unique Journey in Sustainable Design

A hands-on course blending multidisciplinary learning and real-world impact. Through lectures and discussions starting January 21, students will explore participatory design methods that bridge campus-community divides.

Over spring break, from March 15–22, students will travel to Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, to collaborate with Casa Pueblo, an internationally recognized grassroots organization pioneering energy independence and sustainability since 1980. This immersive experience offers unparalleled opportunities to engage with local academics, artists, activists, and communities while contributing to meaningful spatial, environmental, and social change.

This program fosters critical analysis of colonial legacies, explores innovative placemaking, and emphasizes community-centered design for energy justice and sustainability. With costs starting at $2,300 (including airfare, lodging, and transportation), the course offers an all-encompassing learning experience combining seminars, fieldwork, and project curation. Open to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, the program accommodates 14 participants,  and there are still a few seats available to students from across campus. No prior Spanish knowledge is required.

Seize this chance to document, create, and communicate for change while deepening your cultural understanding and design expertise. Apply now and be part of the solution in building a sustainable future!

The application link is open until Saturday, December 21.
