Join the CGS team in welcoming Martin Nekola for his lecture, "The Czech Republic, The European Union and the Rise of Populism," on Friday April 7th at 12PM (CST) at the International and Area Studies Library (IASL), Room 309 and on Zoom.
The current political situation in the Czech Republic, a small country in the very heart of Europe, historically considered the crossroads between the West and the East, is the reflection of the latest developments in the entire European Union, currently facing a serious crisis, caused by Brexit, refugee crisis, coronavirus pandemic and the rise of populist tendencies. The lecture will address all these issues, with the further focus on the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe.
Dr. Martin Nekola is a Prague-based independent scholar who serves as the Project Coordinator at “The Czechoslovak Talks” (https://www.czechoslovaktalks.com/en), a non-profit dedicated to preserving the life stories of Czechoslovaks from around the world. He has also worked as the Research Director at Democracy 21 (https://www.ih21.org/en/home), an NGO that works on the pressing problems of democracy in the 21st century. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the Charles University in Prague and has published extensively on the history of Easern Europe during WWII and the Cold War periods.
