Opportunity for University of Illinois students to attend 2009 Asia-Pacific Homeland Security Summit (APHSS) through APHSS Fellows Program

The Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is partnering with the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH) CIBER program to invite applications from interested students for the UH CIBER APHSS fellows program. Illinois CIBER has limited travel funding available to facilitate successful UIUC applicants to attend this event. Once the students get to Honolulu, the Summit's major sponsors (the UH CIBER is one) will cover their hotel, conference registration, meals and UH campus and island tour expenses.

UIUC undergraduate students at the junior year in school or higher are eligible to apply for the fellows program. Graduate students may also apply. 

Steps to apply for funding support

  1. Students should first review and complete the APHSS Student Fellowship information and application materials described below. Completed applications should be submitted to UH CIBER. Please note that the deadline for application is Monday, Sept. 21, 2009 and decisions on the applications will be announced on or about Friday, Sept. 25th.

Application

Eligibility

Applicants should be either 1) students currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program at an accredited U.S. or foreign college or university; or 2) company grade U.S. military officers (O-1 through O-3) on active duty, National Guard or Reserve status.

Period of Fellowship

November 8-10, 2009. Fellows must be at the conference hotel not later than Sunday, November 8th, 12:00 pm.

Fellowship

The Program will cover conference registration, meals and hotel stay for three nights (double occupancy). Each Fellow will be responsible for their air (if required) and ground transportation to and from the conference hotel. Fellows must be at the conference hotel not later than Sunday, November 8th, 12:00 pm. The number of Fellows chosen will be determined by funding availability.

Opportunities

To learn about homeland security from international experts, meet industry leaders and see the latest technology. All meetings and presentations will be in English.

Paper

Each Fellow will write a 3 – 5 page paper (double-spaced) on a homeland security–related topic presented at the conference. Upon satisfactory completion, the paper will be posted on the conference website. Deadline for completed paper submission is November 30, 2009.

The application packet must include:

  1. Completed and signed application form;
  2. One letter of recommendation from a college professor or military supervisor;
  3. For student applicants: a graded paper, at least 3 pages long, which was submitted for work.
  4. Military officers must submit written approval from their commanding officer to apply and permission to attend the entire conference, if chosen.
By September 21, 2009,
  1. Electronically submit a color photo to be used on the conference website if you are chosen as a Fellow (not more than 500 KBytes) to summit@scd.hawaii.gov
  2. Electronically submit a short profile (bio) to be used on the conference website if you are chosen as a Fellow (not more than 75 words) to summit@scd.hawaii.gov
Application packets must be postmarked no later than 4:30 pm on September 21, 2009. Your photo and profile must be received or your application will not be considered. Successful applicants will be notified via telephone and email no later than September 25, 2009.
