2010 International Summer Institute
Understanding and Teaching about World Religions
Sunday, June 13 through Friday, June 18, 2010 This week-long professional development workshop has been created to use multidisciplinary approaches for understanding and teaching world religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Shintoism, Taoism and indigenous and disporic religious practices of Africa, Latin America and the Carribbean. Pedagogical approaches for elementary and secondary classrooms will also be discussed. All K-16 educators are welcome to attend.

Global Fest 2010: Cultural Crossroads
A Celebration of World Languages and Cultures
Friday, March 12 and Saturday, March 13 Global Fest is a celebration and promotion of the study of world languages and international studies through educational activities connected to the Illinois Learning Standards for students 6th through 12th grades. Global Fest participants learn about and share the knowledge of the world through introductory lessons in languages of Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East; interactive cultural activities and performances; arts and crafts displays; global knowledge competitions, and exhibits.

Teaching the History and Science of Global Warming
Workshop for K-12 Science and Social Science Educators
February 20, 2010 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This workshop for science and social science educators will include an authoritative and accessible review of the history and the science of global climate change and the probable impacts of climate change for U.S. communities. Discussions will include teaching pitfalls, the importance of taking on the challenge of teaching about global climate change and the practical approaches to presenting the subject in middle and high school classrooms.
Presenters and facilitators of the workshop include the Harry E. Preble Endowed Professor of Atmospheric Science, Donald Wuebbles and Professor of History at the University of Illinois U-C, Lillian Hoddeson.

Music in Many Languages
International Summer Institute, June 14-19, 2009
This intensive institute will address ways of incorporating less-commonly taught languages (languages other than Spanish, French and German) and cultures into the classroom, with special emphasis on the elementary general music classroom. Languages will include Chinese, Arabic, Bulgarian, Zulu, and Portuguese (tentative).
