They are encouraged to pursue social justice agendas, to be human rights advocates, to do work that honors the core values of human dignity, and freedom from fear and violence. Many oppose any political agenda, calling for non-activist qualitative research, let the chips fall where they will.

Global Studies Forum: Exploring International Humanitarian Law

This forum will introduce American Red Cross modules used to explore humanitarian issues in the classroom and is applicable to teachers of World Literature, Current Events, World History, and US History.

Educators will examine "Responsibility to Protect" by using real examples from historical and present-day conflicts. Through hands-on exercises, participants will learn to motivate students to think like global citizens. The workshop also includes a keynote speaker and guided review of online resources.

Global Fest is a celebration and promotion of the study of world languages and international studies through educational activities connected to the Illinois Learning Standards for students 6th through 12th grades. Global Fest participants learn about and share the knowledge of the world through introductory lessons in languages of Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East; interactive cultural activities and performances; arts and crafts displays; global knowledge competitions, and exhibits.

Strategies to Globalize the Research, Teaching and Engagement Missions of UIUC: Challenges of Interdisciplinary and Inter-Professional Cooperation

LAS One Credit Course
This seminar is intended for students in translation studies, international and global studies, languages, and linguistics to learn the rules of procedure, basic negotiating procedures and terminology for the United Nations. The course is of particular interest to students interested in careers in international organizations. The course is given in English for students from all languages. Students in the translation studies program will do special exercises translating UN documents into English.

An International Conference: Ecosystem Health and Sustainable Agriculture

This conference brings together a small group of leading scientists and educators from North America and Europe in a 2-day conference on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus to present and discuss new knowledge and international developments in key areas of ecosystem health and sustainable agriculture, particularly as pertaining to the Baltic Sea region in Europe and the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence River regions of North America.

Summer Institute for Languages in the Muslim World 2010

The second annual SILMW will offer intensive courses in a variety of Muslim World languages, including Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Swahili, Urdu, Wolof and Indonesian by experienced, trained, and highly proficient instructors. Classes will be four hours per day over a period of eight weeks, for a total of 132 hours. Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellows studying at the beginning level will receive an additional eight hours of instruction.

2010 International Summer Institute

Sunday, June 13 through Friday, June 18, 2010  This week-long professional development workshop has been created to use multidisciplinary approaches for understanding and teaching world religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Shintoism, Taoism and indigenous and disporic religious practices of Africa, Latin America and the Carribbean. Pedagogical approaches for elementary and secondary classrooms will also be discussed.  All K-16 educators are welcome to attend.
