Throughout the year, the Center for Global Studies organizes and collaborates on a wide variety of activities for faculty and students in higher education, K-12 educators and students, and the general public. These programs are designed to facilitate understanding of global issues that confront the world’s populations today.
Annual Workshops and Institutes
- Global Studies Summer Workshop for High School Students
The Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provides exceptional high school students an opportunity to have an enriching college experience before or immediately after their high school graduation. These intensive summer courses offer college-level interdisciplinary foundations on global studies topics designed to introduce analytical skills and methods for addressing issues from a global perspective. Three pre-college programs that will take place during the Summer of 2018: Sustainable Futures, Global Health, and International Law and Social Justice.
Each of our programs is taught by faculty and instructors on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. Participating students engage in rigorous academic studies, meet with college advisors to discuss their college plans, and stay in University Residence Halls throughout the program.

- Summer Institute for the Languages of the Muslim World
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign hosts this immersive summer language institute. The summer institute offers intensive courses in a variety of Muslim world languages, including Arabic, Urdu, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, Uzbek, and Wolof. The registration deadline for the Summer Institute is April 30.
- International Studies Research Lab for Community College Teachers
Offered annually in collaboration with the International & Area Studies Library and Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center, the International Studies Research Lab (ISRL) welcomes community college faculty interested in expanding global studies curricular and library offerings at their home institutions.
