Dear CGS Faculty, Friends, and Students,
We hope this email finds you well and ready to begin a productive new semester. We are writing to share both great news, and also a disappointment. As you know, the Center for Global Studies recently applied for a renewal of our Title VI NRC and FLAS funding for the 2018-2022 cycle. We have just received word that CGS has been awarded funding by the US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) program, which will be a boon to the University’s vision of tackling global problems and expanding the human experience. Unfortunately, we were not awarded the FLAS grant for the 2018-2022 cycle, negatively impacting our ability to provide language and area studies fellowships to our talented students. We are still waiting on details pertaining to our award from the program office. In the meantime, we would like to acknowledge and thank you for your time, effort, and input toward the proposal, which fared exceptionally well in a very competitive funding round. We are also grateful to our staff and students for their dedication and long hours. CGS is well situated to continue to help globalize the research, teaching, and outreach missions of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
We are eager to get to work with you on implementing the many initiatives and program points put forward in the Title VI NRC proposal. We will be reaching out to you soon to discuss these details. We also want to recognize that this application cycle was particularly challenging because of programmatic delays at the Department of Education. We thus had to start planning a new academic year without any guarantee of funding, which especially impacted students across departments, and our fall events programming. Many departments and faculty on campus made great efforts to help support students and programming in the interim. We are very grateful for your generous patience and understanding during this process. Thank you.
We hope as many of you as possible will help us celebrate your and the Center’s achievements during our fall celebration, held on Wednesday, September 5, from 3:00-5 PM in Room 101 of the International Studies Building. Please stop by to learn about new Center initiatives and activities and to help us toast and recognize these achievements on behalf of CGS faculty, students, and staff.
